Discover reading program

No, but it covers the vast majority. As well, the focus in teaching the young reader can remain on establishing decoding as the most reliable method for word identification purposes. Once we expose students to the logic of the alphabet code, then the focus can remain on developing the process of decoding to an automatic level. And that is how a good reader accesses text. For teaching purposes however, it became necessary to create a generic term that covered the different letters and letter combinations that are used in English spellings.

The term Sound Links was coined for this purpose. It is a general term used to help the student think about linking the sounds phonemes that he segments in words into representations using letters.

In the long run, they are very inefficient. These are, after all, essential to comprehension, which is the heart of reading. For most students, the meaning of any given word is evident once the word is correctly decoded. Indeed, research over many years has established a strong relationship between decoding and comprehension Adams, However, for some students, that is not the case.

Care must therefore be taken, that students understand the word they have just decoded. Teachers need to explore a student's knowledge of vocabulary, syntax and morphology, and integrate that into the process of decoding with the student. Teaching activities in the Discover Reading Program are included for that purpose. Students who continue to struggle with the meaning of a passage despite good decoding may require remedial work in the comprehension process over and above what is provided in the way of comprehension activities in the Discover Reading program.

In The Discover Reading Program, the sounds are taught from words taken from sentences that come from stories created specifically for the program. Using stories provided us with a more meaning-based approach in the first place and the opportunity to weave in some simple comprehension-based activities into the program right from the start. The introduction of a story right from the start also makes the task of learning to read more enjoyable and probably more relevant for the student.

Make no mistake though, that the primary goal of this program is the development of the decoding process, which in turn provides a strong foundation for overall reading comprehension. The Discover Reading Program is based on our clinical reading model which assumes that reading is a complex and sophisticated interaction between automatic decoding and the ability to comprehend what one is decoding Truch, It is our assumption based on research and clinical experience that as a first step to becoming a good reader, a student must learn to decode written words accurately and quickly.

These are necessary but they are not sufficient. Teaching the student these components does not always result in automatic decoding or integrated reading. We've talked about it so often people have begged us to train it. So July we'll be training and certifying professionals who want to add a true top-of-the-line tool to help struggling students become great readers. Here are 8 of the specific reasons why we're offering this very specialized certification training:.

The decision to add another program should not be taken lightly. Some practitioners want every program they can get their hands on while others are very selective. You probably already have a reading program, or two, or more. The question is, do you really need another one? Steve Truch has a huge heart for kids. Combined with his unwavering will to make real and lasting changes in students, he entered private practice absolutely determined to find a way to help kids make the breakthroughs they needed.

There was only one problem -- He couldn't find a reading program comprehensive enough. There was nothing that built all the skills his training and experience told him were needed for the big successes he knew were possible. And yes, he looked at the best of what's out there? So he took the best concepts, the best techniques, best practices that were available and then combined it all with what researchers reported, and built the ideal reading program for the students in his clinic.

Before long, people were coming from across Canada to spend a week or more building those reading skills in Steve's Reading Foundation Clinic in Calgary.

Nature-studying, painting, reading, thinking…these are her favorite things. Through writing and speaking she teaches mothers and so vicariously their children the delight to be discovered in seeing, knowing, reading and writing.
