Much of Ward's work seeks to capture the wild beauty of the Monterey area, where he makes his home, but he also travels further afield, including to the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Montana, Taos and Santa Fe in his search for fresh subjects and new perspectives. In addition to his career as a fine artist, he has also been a teacher and is the author of "First Impressions-Sketching Nature in Watercolor".

Ward finds and paints his works both "plein air" and from sketches he finds in his travels throughout the west. In the studio he may use many of his outdoor works as ideas for his larger canvases. As a charter member of the Society of American Impressionists, Ward is hardly a newcomer to Impressionism. He has been adapting its techniques to his landscapes for most of his 50 year career. Influenced by many of his 19th century predecessors, Ward has let much of their work teach him how to capture the qualities of light and color in nature.
