Norton Ghost is one disk imaging and cloning tool that firstly developed in the s. It can help you make backup images of the whole hard disk, selected partitions or only those files that mean the most to you. When something goes wrong, Norton Ghost can restore your computer to previous functional status. Besides, it can also help you clone one hard drive to another hard drive. In a word, if you want to make an image back for your computer or want to clone to the new hard drive, Norton Ghost is not a bad choice.
However, now Norton Ghost is no longer available for the Home user. It was discontinued by Symantec in Indeed you can still download the latest version - Norton Ghost 15, but it only offers day free trial and then you need to pay for it. Here in this guide, you will get the detailed steps about how to use Norton Ghost As we have we mentioned above, it only offers days free trial.
If you prefer a free tool to help you backup, restore or clone your hard drive, you can refer to the next part to get the best free alternative to Norton Ghost. Install Norton Ghost and open it.
It will run a step-by-step wizard the first time you open it. At last, you will see the Easy Setup interface where you can create a backup at once. You can also click Cancel option and set the backup task later. When the process was finished, shutdown the computer, unplugged the power and SATA cables from both the drives and plugged the cables from the old drive to the new drive. When I start the computer, it goes through the Vista startup screen and gets to the Log In screen. Then it shows Preparing your desktop on the screen.
After that I get a light blue screen and nothing happens. The old disk has a recovery image partition thaI I did not copy. Also, I formatted the drive before initiating the clone. You can't give the destination a drive letter like that. The copy drive should be done into unallocated space, ghost will create the partition and the format is part of the image. The recovery partition that you chose not to copy, was it located before or after the windows partition?
I'm pretty busy today, I'll give you instructions on how to fix it if you want to try that instead of starting over. You need to have the system setup with only the new drive installed, make sure the old drive is not plugged in.
They all become highlighed, then hit the delete button on your keyboard. Thanks for your reply. Right now I have the original drive connected and have disconnected the SATA and power cable from the new drive. It will be quite easy to disconnect the old drive connect its SATA cable to the new drive or connect the new drive with a new SATA cable and have both drives connected.
To your question - "The recovery partition that you chose not to copy, was it located before or after the windows partition? HP manual suggested to burn recovery DVDs and the delete the recovery partiion to recover the disk space. I burnt the DVDs but never deleted the recovery partition.
I can do that now. I am ok to start all over as it is just a matter of connecting the SATA and power cables. If you can provide me directions on how to proceed, that will be great - starting from how I can restore the new box to the state as it came out of the box do I unallocate the space via Disk Management?
Posted Aug 31, AM. Posted Sep 24, AM. I had no problem a few months back installing in in Windows 7 64 Ultimate RC 1. I also have UAC off.
The only other difference besides the OS that I can see is I 'may' have not had all my development suites installed on the Windows 7 machine, but they are installed on my Vista machine, like Visual Studio Also check the event log for any other error information in case there is more going wrong.
Posted Oct 15, AM. RE: norton ghost 14 installation fails with error Best Answer. Posted Oct 19, AM. I had found several references about InProgress and did rollback because it pointed to a temp file and getting rolledback was what was killing ghost.
Posted Oct 20, AM. Posted Nov 10, PM. So just for anyone else out there That is you need to run a chat with Norton Support who will remote into your PC, download a Mb patched version of the Ghost 14 Depending on your broadband connection it takes a couple of hours. As this seems to be a known issue impacting a number of customers I'm not quite sure why they don't post the solution and any required downloads on their support site.
When looking for installation issues with Ghost on their Product support site they don't even offer Ghost as one of the product options!?! This thread already has a best answer. Would you like to mark this message as the new best answer? All Rights Reserved.
