However, a false start moved it back to 32, and the kick by Cristian Zendejas was missed. Following the miss, the Cougars responded with a play, yard drive capped by a 1-yard Deon McIntosh touchdown run. Down at home, ASU's half of horrors was not yet over. Another fumble, this time by Daniyel Ngata, set WSU up at midfield with under three minutes left in the half. That is something that we knew they were going to be.

Three plays after the Ngata fumble, de Laura connected with Calvin Jackson on a yard touchdown. With boos being heard from the stands, ASU put together their best drive of the day. Running 11 plays in just , the Sun Devils marched 78 yards down the field, with Daniels finding Bunkley-Shelton for a yard touchdown.

The defenses took over to start the second half as the teams traded punts. Midway through the quarter, ASU faced a fourth-and-2 from their own Trailing by 21 and with time ticking away, Edwards instead opted to punt, a decision met by more boos from the remaining fans. The third quarter went scoreless, although Washington State connected on a yard field goal on the opening play of the third quarter to extend their lead to Another field goal was added on later in the quarter following another ASU punt deep from their own territory.

With the game effectively out of reach with under seven minutes left, the Sun Devils did find the endzone on a Trayanum run. A failed onside kick attempt was recovered by the Cougars, who then missed a field goal try.

Chasing a three-score deficit and facing a fourth-and-2 near midfield midway through the third quarter, Jayden Daniels wanted to go for it. As he looked to the sideline for a playcall, he saw the punt team run on instead. Edwards was correct in feeling there was enough time to mount a comeback, but his team needed a momentum swing in their favor, something a punt wouldn't provide.

A key conversion to keep the drive alive could. After three games calling plays from the press box, ASU offensive coordinator Zak Hill returned to the sidelines.

The turnovers were the primary culprit. ASU turned the ball over early and often and dug themselves into an insurmountable hole. We got to get better. For stretches, ASU's offense showed they could move the ball effectively on the ground and through the air. However, what stopped them most often was not the WSU defense, but their own miscues.

The passing game remains as inconsistent as it has been all season long. Daniels finished for for yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. While he looked good in some situations under pressure, in others he was forced into costly mistakes. We needed to force him to make some bad decisions on the run, and I felt like we did that.

Taylor was inserted back in as kickoff return man and had five returns for yards, including a dazzling one that went for 60 yards. He also displayed better judgment when it came to fielding balls deeper in the end zone. LV Bunkley-Shelton had one punt return for six yards. Washington State did no damage in the return game with just the one return for 15 yards.

Only one of ASU's seven penalties came on special teams, that being the false start on the field goal. Overall there was improvement from recent weeks. Coaches don't make plays or commit penalties or turn the ball over. They can put players in position to make the plays but if players aren't making plays, maybe there should be personnel changes and that can fall on the coaching staff.

Preparation also falls on the coaches and there is no excuse for such a performance coming off a bye week and being at home. A decision the media asked about postgame regarded the choice to punt from ASU's own 44, trailing with left in the third quarter and facing a fourth-and Edwards has always been conservative when it comes to such decisions and said there was enough game left he didn't want to risk it. Very little had gone right for the Sun Devils at that point so why not go for it, particularly when the strength of your team is supposedly the running game?

Now the challenge of this coaching staff will be to get this team up for the next game when its ultimate goal seems out of reach. ASU used 59 players in the contest. Johnny Wilson missed the last three games with a pulled hamstring and saw some action but was limited and Edwards said after the game he was too sore to remain in the contest.

White practiced in one of the two minute sessions open to the media last week and Edwards said he didn't want to put his player out there when he wasn't completely healthy. Trayanum had a season-high 19 carries in his absence. DE Tyler Johnson came out of the game with five minutes left in the third quarter after sustaining some sort of leg injury and did not return.

He was replaced by Anthonie Cooper who has seen considerable playing time this season. CB Chase Lucas returned after missing the Utah game with a back injury sustained early in the game against Stanford. USC 41, Arizona 34 - Trojans , had point lead but had to hang on. The 20th straight loss for the Wildcats. Oregon 52, Colorado 29 - Oregon moves into sole possession of first place in the North. California 39, Oregon State 25 - Beavers , fall out of first place tie.
